GIRL’S NIGHT OUT

The club was called Savage.

It was a seedy looking place on a narrow street in Town Kentucky. It had once been a feed store but with a severe economic downtown, most of the struggling local farmers had lost their farms. The opening of a gigantic mall-type western supply store in nearby Louisville had put a final nail in the coffin and the feed store had gone under.

Not at all the sort of place two respectable school teachers should visit.

The new owners hadn’t done much to renovate the building. They had put in a stage and a bar, scattered a few tables around, added some disco lights from the sixties, and called it a club. Mostly because there was nothing else to do around town on a Friday night, Savage’s became a popular place.

The new owners had added one thing, a large neon sign picturing a half-naked girl holding up a cowboy hat. The club featured country music and so-called exotic dancing.

“We’re not really going in there, are we?” Connie Wilder asked. “What if somebody should see?”

“Nobody’s going to see us,” Addie said. “None of our friends would dream of coming to a place like this.”

“I hope you’re right,” Connie said.

Addie’s friend Connie was a petite, slightly plump, brunette who taught sixth grade at the same school where Addie taught seventh. Addie was taller, with auburn hair, and the figure of a runway model. Visiting Savage’s was Addie’s idea, and Connie had come along reluctantly.

The brunette did most everything reluctantly except for her feverish devotion to her church. In fact, it had been amazing that Connie had ever agreed to come with Addie. It was probably because Connie looked up to Addie like an older sister. Connie was a good teacher, but she pretended to a confidence and assurance she did not have. The truth was Connie was insecure in a lot of ways. She meekly followed along with Addie’s ideas like a lost lamb following a shepherd.

“This guy has to be a hundred years old,” Connie said.

At times her friend’s whiny, complaining voice got on Addie’s nerves. Especially now. For the first time in her life Addie was going to get to see a childhood crush in person. Yes, Jim “Bud” Fisher had been around for a long time, a craggy-faced, whiskey voiced singer who had briefly been a star, but now had been mostly forgotten. He was playing a one-night gig at Savage, and then moving on to his next club. It might be the only change Addie ever had to see him.

“What if Jack or Tom find out about this?” Connie said.

“Just stay in the car if you don’t want to come,” Addie said.

She got out of her car and slammed the door furiously. She started across the street toward the club. A moment later Connie was beside her. Deep down she had known the mousy Connie would never stay in the car by herself on a dark, deserted street.

Addie’s heart was pounding. Connie protested meekly a half dozen times, but Adelle paid no attention.
